    WEAPONS
This section lists the weapons available in the game, and the possible upgrades available for each of them, along with the statistics for all the weapons.
Handguns

more details
The basic pistol type weapons of the game. Most useful for taking down a small amount of enemies with precise headshots at close to medium range. Can be surprisingly good for sniping though if you run out of rifle ammo. (For example, I once took out all the catapult crews in the castle with the Red9+stock)

The handguns are mostly of middling power, but the Red9 is upgradeable to be one of the most deadly weapons in the game.

Knife
Along with Resident Evil, Code Veronica, this game is one of only two in the entire series where the combat knife is actually useful. It isn't very powerful, but now that it can be used by merely pressing the left trigger button, you can use it to finish off enemies that you've knocked to the ground, deflect incoming projectiles, or just to slash like crazy at weaker enemies. I've even managed to kill a chainsaw woman with it, since each slash stops the enemy attacking you for a split second.

It is a weak weapon, and obviously only useful at close range, but it IS useful. Since it takes up no inventory space, you'd be wise to remember you have it. Great for saving ammo when you're up against a weak enemy, or if you've run out of bullets in your clip and dont have time to reload.

Magnums

more details
RE4 has three magnums, including the devastatingly powerful secret "Hand cannon".

All the magnums are exceedingly powerful handguns which are best used for taking out chainsaw maniacs and boss creatures, due to the severe lack of ammunition for them throughout the game.

The Broken Butterfly and Handcannon are revolvers, while the Killer 7 is a Desert Eagle style semiautomatic.

Rifles

more details
The game has two rifle type weapons. One is a primitive bolt action rifle, and the other is a modern semiautomatic rifle.

The bolt action is upgradable to a higher total power rating, but the semiautomatic is far more useful due to the far faster rate of fire.

The rifles are obviously the sniper's weapon of choice. A thermal scope is available for dealing with regenerators later in the game, only useable with these weapons.

Shotguns

more details
There are three shotguns in the game. A primitive pump action shotgun, a more modern version called the riot gun (police combat shotgun), and the high-tech drum-fed Striker.

Of these the striker is best used at close range, while the others are good from close to medium range. They are powerful when upgraded, and great for dealing with large crowds of enemies, or parasites protruding from a ganado's head.

The striker in particular has a very short barrel, so will usually hit nearly everything on the screen when you fire it.

Shotgun ammo is plentiful, so these weapons will likely be your most used overall, as is often the case in Resident Evil games.

Specials

more details
These are the more unusual weapons of the game.

The Chicago typewriter is a Thompson submachine gun that is avaiable when you replay the game, after completing Assignment Ada. It will cost 1 million pesetas. Insanely powerful.

The Handcannon is obtained for free from the merchant on a replay, but only when you've gotten the highest possible star ratings with all characters and stages on Mercenaries mode. It requires upgrading to gain infinite ammunition, but is always a great weapon to have. Even more insanely powerful than the Chicago Typewriter when upgraded.

Rocket launchers will usually kill everything except a boss in one shot, but are very expensive, and take a lot of the fun out of the game. An infinite launcher is available for a million pesetas when you complete the game.

The TMP is a machine pistol/submachine gun that has low power, but is useful for dealing with crowds, and is actually perfectly alright for dealing with anything, so long as you have enough ammunition. Worth a try at least.

The mine thrower is a very amusing weapon that fires timed exploding darts. They stick into enemies and explode after a certain period of time. Dangerous to use, since the enemy can often get close to you before the explosion which CAN hurt both you and Ashley. Its available once you get to the castle. Not very practical in general, but I found it useful. It can be fitted with a telescopic sighting system, which makes it useful as a backup sniper weapon in case you run out of rifle ammunition, although the rounds take some time to arrive at their target, making it tricky at best to use against moving targets.
