  Feb 27 2008 - Resident Evil 0 for Wii

February 27, 2008 - Following the worldwide success of Resident Evil 4, Capcom will be giving Wii owners a chance to sample another entry in the series, Resident Evil 0. The latest issue of Famitsu reports that a port of the game is on the way and will be released to Japan this summer. International releases will presumably follow.

Expectedly, Capcom is giving the game full Wiimote controls. While not providing official details, the magazine speculates that you'll now be able to play with one hand, suggesting that Capcom may be using the Wiimote to make RE0 into a point and click adventure of some sort. The magazine also notes that the Wii version of RE4 supported the Classic Controller, so perhaps we can look forward to standard controls as well.

In case you're unfamiliar, RE0 was originally released for the GameCube as the fifth entry in the classic zombie franchise, following Resident Evil, RE2 and RE3 for the PlayStation, and Code Veronica for the Dreamcast and PS2. Players switch off between Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen as they experience the events leading up to part one of the series.

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles [Wii]

Flailing Zombies Meet Motion-Sensitive Controls in New Resident Evil Game.

TOKYO — September 20, 2007; Capcom, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today showcased Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles for the Wii home video game system from Nintendo at Tokyo Game Show 2007. The game will include a two-player co-op mode and support for the Wii Zapper for even more intense light-gun style shooting action. Resident Evil is the highest selling Capcom series with more than 30 million games sold worldwide. Rated M for Mature by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB), Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles will be available on November 13 at a suggested retail price of $49.95.

“Resident Evil has become one of the premier franchises in the games industry, with more than 30 million RE games sold around the world,” said Jack Symon, director, product marketing, Capcom Entertainment. “The innovative controller functionality of the Wii will allow us to design innovative, original game play never before seen in a Resident Evil game. With The Umbrella Chronicles, we’re adapting Resident Evil to the innovations of the Wii.”

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles is a brand new game in the Resident Evil franchise, with familiar locales from the entire series, created specifically for the unique characteristics of the Wii console. This action/shooter hybrid reveals the back story behind the fall of the Umbrella Corporation by exploring locations from Resident Evil 0, 1, 2 and 3 as well as new never-before-seen locations, such as Umbrella’s stronghold. Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles combines first-person, light-gun style combat with interactive pathways, multiple weapons and new enemies to create an entirely new Resident Evil experience that could only be delivered on the Wii.

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles [Wii]

Some of the features of the game are stated and so far it looks to be coming out nice.

"Capcom producer Masachika Kawata wants to make something clear as he takes the stage at the company's Gamers Day 2007 press conference in San Francisco. He's speaking about the studio's new Wii project, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles. "It's a brand new all original title that has been developed from the ground-up," he says. "It's a title that isn't a port of any way, shape or kind." That much is true. The project features a storyline that finally exposes what happened to the devious Umbrella Corporation. But Chronicles won't be entirely new to those who've played through the survival horror franchise's many offerings because it takes you back into the mansion, on board the train, and into the police station before you finally get to Umbrella's stronghold. And did we mention that this is an on-rails shooter?

"[The game] has been developed focusing on the point, shoot and aim feature of the Resident Evil franchise and we're trying to deepen that part of the experience," explains Kawata. He's not kidding. To play Umbrella Chronicles, all you really need is the Wii remote because the action is pre-set and auto-choreographed for you. At the most basic level, you point the Wii remote at the television screen and blast zombies as the first-person view camera takes you through the eerie locales. So if you thought you were getting a true sequel to Resident Evil 4 when you signed up for this effort, think again.

The genre is hardly unexplored. SEGA has House of the Dead and Capcom itself has Resident Evil: Dead Aim, but these are light gun games and Umbrella Chronicles is not. It survives by the Wii remote and you will survive only if you learn how to wield it to point and kill with speed and accuracy. The gameplay mechanics may be reduced or simplified compared to the Resident Evil norm -- we won't argue that they're not -- and yet having played the title's first mission, there's no denying that the end experience is still a fun one. It looks good, too.

Kawata is promising that the title will run between 15 and 20 hours long and while many of the environments will look familiar -- you'll play through portions of Resident Evil 0, 1, 2 and 3 -- this will be the first time most of them have been realized in true 3D. Remember, for as pretty as the remake of the first survival horror entry was on GameCube, those backgrounds were pre-rendered, not true polygonal 3D. Unfortunately, we only got to see one of the locales and it was the famous mansion from the first game.

The camera takes you through the mansion in cinematic fashion, slowly peeking around corners to reveal shambling zombies, making dramatic 180-degree turns to showcase speedy Crimsons and wobbling up and down to illustrate that your character is actually running. While the first-person view is dominant, you will not traverse the entire game without having ever seen the heroes and heroines you're playing as -- a roster that includes everybody from Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine to Billy Coen, Rebecca Chambers and Carlos Oliveira. The characters will not really have different abilities, although some will use unique weapons. You'll see them in brief cut-scenes as they interact with each other -- you might be controlling Chris, but Jill could be fighting alongside you during a sequence. You'll also see them during contextual maneuvers -- when hordes of zombies approach, you can tap the A button to counter their attacks, at which point the camera will pan back to show your character send a powerful kick their way, knocking the enemies down.

Umbrella Chronicles isn't merely mindless shooting -- there is that, yes, but there is also much more to consider. The Wii remote affords you pixel-perfect shooting accuracy. You can cap zombie heads without a second's hesitation or you can alternatively shoot them in the arms and legs, at which point they'll drop to the ground. Your reticule decreases in size the longer your hold it over a zombie's face and the smaller it is, the greater chance you have of pulling off a single-shot head explosion, from what we could gather. A button picks up items and chooses paths (occasionally, you can select to go in one direction or another), and B button is your trigger. Press it and you'll shoot -- that simple. But you can use nunchuk's analog stick to look around the game world -- left, right, up and down -- as you glide on-rails through the areas. You'll want to do this because it's how you find the hidden items such as guns, ammo and health that are strewn about the levels.

The 10-minute demo of Umbrella Chronicles featured only three weapons: the handgun, shotgun and machine gun. The latter two guns require you to manage your bullets because if you don't you may eventually run out of ammo. However, you have an infinite supply of bullets for your handgun. Your shooting reticule is represented on-screen by an orange circle. The orange color depletes from the circle as you burn through a round and when it's gone altogether you'll need to quickly reload. Fittingly, you'll keep tapping the B trigger to shoot off round after round from your handgun and shotgun, but you can simply hold it down to stream bullets from your machine gun. Additional weapons planned for the final version include everything from rocket launchers to knives and grenades, according to Capcom. You switch between your weapons at any point by pressing down on the Wii remote's D-Pad.

Items are hidden within the stages, which feature highly interactive objects. You can shoot apart doors and windows, knock out lights (the rooms will darken -- we haven't figured out the benefit of doing this), gun down paintings (they'll eventually fall off the walls) and even blow apart chandeliers, which may fall from the ceiling and land on enemies if timed correctly. The animations and particles -- doors splinter, windows break apart, bullets line walls -- add a lot to the atmosphere.

The mansion demo we played was simple to pick up but also very challenging -- it proved to be more difficult than we anticipated. For the record, we made it through the mansion without being killed, but just everybody else present died several times. Yes, we're patting ourselves on the back as we write this. Men from boys, right? Anyway, it's clear that Capcom isn't going to make the shooter easy, which is a big plus because the added difficulty has a way of keeping you on your toes. When your health is low and a zombie charges forward, biting into your neck (blood sprays the screen), you really feel the terror and want nothing more than to gun the creature down. The demo ended with a boss fight against the giant, slithering snake from remake, which died after we continued to blast its mouth.

Asked about the completely new locations in the game, Kawata said, "I think that will have to remain a secret for now."

There is a chance that Umbrella Chronicles can be played by more than a single person. Asked about a multiplayer mode, the producer responded: "We're still looking into it so I really can't say anything definite right now."

Umbrella Chronicles looks pretty impressive on Wii. The game is running in 480p and 16:9 widescreen at a fluidity of 30 frames per second. Some of the world and character textures blur up close, which is disappointing, but nevertheless Capcom has really used light and darkness to great effect. Shadowy environments become illuminated in quick flashes of lightning and the silhouettes of characters and objects project and distort onto walls and walkways. Animations are smooth and particle effects over-the-top -- blood splatters in every direction as you decapitate zombies with well-placed bullets. We'd wager this is one of the prettier Wii titles and we'd expect nothing less from Capcom.

The title has been in development for nearly a year with a team 40 people strong, according to Kawata-san, and is scheduled for a summer release on Wii. We'll have much more on the game just as soon as we get the opportunity to play deeper into it, but even from this early junction it seems clear that the developer has another winner on its hands, even if it doesn't follow the more traditional Resident Evil formula."

"Biohazard 5 is only listed as being on PS3 on a popular Japanese online stores trading list. This has led to speculation that Capcom may not bother to release a Japanese -- Xbox 360 -- version of Bio 5, because Microsoft’s console is not popular in Japan, thus making a Japanese release not worth the effort."

Resident Evil: Extinction [Movie]

Some images and some news of Resident Evil: Extinction can be found here at IGN. They have added about four new articles about the movie in the past two weeks. Here is the latest one:

RE: Extinction Details Revealed

- Filmmaker talks about the trilogy concept, Road Warrior and burying Vegas in sand.

This week at the Hollywood and Video Games Summit in Beverly Hills, we got a chance to talk to the keynote speaker, filmmaker Paul W.S. Anderson. The director, famous for adapting videogames to film, talked briefly about the third movie in the Resident Evil trilogy, Resident Evil: Extinction.

"My concept behind the trilogy of movies I always imagined making was: the first movie would be a prequel to the very first game. It would tell the back story of the videogame world. The second movie would be set kind of intertwined with what was happening in Raccoon City. And then the third movie would be like a post script to the world of the videogame," Anderson explained.

"So the third movie, Resident Evil: Extinction is set several years in the future and it's pretty much after the Umbrella Corporation has failed to control the outbreaks of the T-Virus and the world has literally been wiped out. There's very little humanity left and a handful of human survivors are traveling around the remnants of the world in these heavily armored convoys and what they do is they go to the least populated parts of the world, because they figure that's where the least undead will be, and they travel in these heavily armored trucks and customized rolling fortresses—it's very Road Warrior--at high speed so that the undead don't get anywhere near them. So that's where the movie takes place, primarily in the deserts of Nevada and around Las Vegas. But of course, it's a Las Vegas that has kind of fallen now, because what's happened is, with no one to take care of it, the desert has come back in and half-buried Vegas. So… we built all these casinos which are sort of buried in the sand.

"We built… parts of Paris [the casino]. So we built a chunk of the Eiffel Tower, but half-buried in sand. It's really spectacular."

According to the article the movie is set to be in Nevada (that's where the pictures) come in.

To commemorate Resident Evil’s 10th anniversary, Capcom will be releasing 7 inch models/figures for the hefty sum of $209.99. For that price you can expect them to be high-quality and limited edition. These models also seem to be done by Neca, the same company that has done the Resident Evil 4 figures. So, if you’re a big fan you may want to pre-order them, that’s if you’re willing to ‘buy them at a high price’. Chris, Jill, Hunk, and Mr. Zombie (with bonus Cerberus) will be available. Though, I’m not sure if they will have style variants, i.e. Resident Evil Remake, 2, 3 etc. Check them out here.

[Update] Just a quick comment on the news story. Entertainment earth tends to have their pricing on cases, actual price will be between $10-$15 a pop. Check out www.cornerstorecomics.com or www.amazingtoyz.com for some of the best deals you will find on them as a sets of 4. - Thanks to Last Call.

The company today bucked the current industry trend of disappointing financial figures by reporting 6.9 billion yen ($62 million) in earnings for the fiscal year ended March 31, an increase of more than 91 percent. Last year, the company reported 3.6 billion yen ($32 million) in profits.

On the sales front, Capcom raked in 70.3 billion yen ($632 million) for the year, compared to 65.9 billion yen ($589 million) from the year prior.

While Resident Evil 4 and new Monster Hunter titles were big winners for the company's home videogame sales business, Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, Without Warning and Beatdown struggled in terms of sales. Capcom partially blamed "a sluggish US market and competition with foreign game manufacturers."

The publisher referred to North America as "the weakening world's largest game market," and reported an 18 percent decrease in net sales and operating income down nearly 88 percent for the territory.

As part of its business strategy, Capcom has decided to introduce new IP at at the beginning of the console transition, particularly Dead Rising and Lost Planet. Capcom senior VP of sales and marketing Mark Beaumont recently told Next-Gen.Biz, "We want to make them more global products and at the same time add something that can appeal to the different territories. I have found the developers in Japan to be very open to the idea of working with us to find ways to make better global products."

News has been pouring in over the past few weeks as Sony Screen Gems is prepping to shoot Resident Evil: Extinction, which we're being told may have dropped 'Extinction and may just be titled 'Resident Evil 3.' So far it has been announced that Mike Epps, Milla Jovovich, Sienna Guillory, Oded Fehr, Iain Glen, Debra Marshall and Ashanti Douglas will star in the pic directed by Russell Mulcahy and written by the infamous Paul W.S. Anderson. Today two more have joined the cast, read on to see who they are. Milla Jovovich is back as Alice, and she's running with a new pack of humans, leading a caravan that's cutting through the Nevada desert on a long trek to Alaska. Hunted by the minions of the perpetually scheming Dr. Isaacs, Alice has zombies hungry for her flesh (once again) and lab rats hungry for her blood -- while Alice is hungry for only one thing: revenge...

Ali (Final Destination) Larter, singer Ashanti Douglas (as we reported yesterday) and Chris (Eragon) Egan have joined the cast of "Resident Evil 3" for Screen Gems, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The threesome will join "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" returnees Milla Jovovich, Oded Fehr and Mike Epps, who already have boarded the video game-based horror-thriller.

Larter will play Claire, a new character to the film franchise who was introduced in the video game "Resident Evil 2." Claire leads a convoy across the Nevada desert. Alice (Jovovich) joins them in their fight for survival as they battle against the evil Umbrella Corp. Ashanti will play Nurse Betty, while Egan will play Mikey. Fehr is back as Carlos, while Epps will reprise his role as L.J. The film starts shooting Monday in Mexico.

UbiSoft is delaying the release date for the PAL version of Resident Evil 4 (PC) which means that people who live in North America will be able to purchase the game in May and for European fans it will be available sometime in June.

Until then all we can do is check the system requirements and hope that the game will run properly on our systems. Looking at the requirements it doesn't seem to be one of those games that require expensive hardware to run. Take a look for yourselves:

Supported OS: Windows® 2000/XP (only)
Processor: 1 GHz Pentium® III or AMD Athlon™ (or better)
RAM: 256 MB
Video Card: 128 MB DirectX® 9.0c-compliant AGP or PCI Express
graphics card (256 or higher for High Graphics Detail support) (see supported list*)
Sound Card: DirectX 9.0c compliant (or better)
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c or higher (included on disc)
CD-ROM: 12x or faster CD-ROM
Hard Drive Space: 1.2 GB minimum
Peripherals Supported: Gamepad

*Supported Video Cards at Time of Release
NVIDIA® GeForce™ FX/6/7 families
ATI® Radeon® 9200-9800/X families.

Another thing worth knowing is that SourceNext will be re-releasing Biohazard 3 for PC. The following information is courtesy of Resident Evil Network:

It will features the original mode and the arranged mode (for those wondering, the arranged mode is exactly the same as the US RE3 difficulty, which is harder than the Japanese version), and higher resolution videos. Just like the first release, all of the 8 costumes will be unlocked right from the start.

To see how good the screen quality of the game will be, you can download the shots here.

Something worth noticing is that this is not the first re-release of RE3. RE3 PC was first released in Japan, September 99. It was re-released in June 2001 for a 3,255 yen, followed by a 'greatest hit' edition for 2,079 yen.

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis [PC, PSX, GC, DC]
Resident Evil 4 [PC, PS2, GC]

The survival-horror franchise is enjoying a massive renaissance, still basking in the critical glow of the successful Resident Evil 4. However, since an epic of such size and technical requirements could not be scaled down to a cellphone with any degree of reasonable success, Capcom set out to create an original game that delivered the elements and essence of the popular console game, but in an experience that makes sense for mobile.

Resident Evil: The Missions breaks down a giant zombie safari into 100 small stages, each composed of a just a few rooms and a small goal, such as rescue a helpful citizen or blow off a zombie's head. Each mission is timed, and depending on how quickly you navigate through the mission, the game gives you a grade. These bite-sized sessions last no longer than a couple minutes apiece, which is the perfect duration for a quick play between life's other occupations, like work or school. The 100 missions are displayed as a giant branching pyramid. You play through the game on different paths, meaning you could feasibly run through it multiple times without even seeing all of the sights.

The plot starts out simple, with S.T.A.R.S. agent Jill Valentine checking out a giant mansion linked to the diabolical Umbrella Corporation. The site has been taken over by the shambling undead, and it is up to Valentine (as well as some secret, unlockable characters -- which I am loathe to ruin here) to clear out the zombies and save the proverbial day. Valentine has access to a lot of requisite Resident Evil firepower and items, like herbs. Fans will really appreciate that this mobile game does everything in its power to feel like it belongs right next to the rest of the entries in the series.

Fortunately, the game doesn't use traditional RE controls, so you just press in the direction you want Valentine to run -- no need to rotate her body, then press forward. (Bless you, Capcom.) The collision detection was something I was hoping wouldn't suffer, and am pleased to report no hang-ups on invisible barriers. When you move Valentine near something she can use, a small icon appears above it, this way you can tell functional doorways and whatnot from the background.

RE also employs auto-aim, which is useful for a mobile game where you don't have the tools for pinpoint accuracy. You switch between running and shooting with a soft key. When you are in the shooting stance, any target within range is painted with a red target. You can pivot to pick off other targets, as well as look up or down. Looking up is how you score one-shot kills, which are important in a series known for being a little stingy with ammunition. Running out of ammo in this mobile edition is just as painful as it is in the console game. You have access to a knife for up-close attacks, and if you can time your strikes just right, you can do hugely potent counter-attacks that drop a zombie cold.

Resident Evil runs on 3D-enabled handsets. It uses pre-rendered backgrounds, but casts polygonal models over them. It looks quite nice on the test LG VX8000 I am playing the game on. The models move smoothly with pretty good animation. The texture work is solid, but not spectacular. Valentine (and the other humans) got the most attention it seems. Many of the zombies look like a collection of gory-textured polygons hastily pasted into humanoid form. The sound is pretty good. There is some beep-boop sinister music, as well as several sound effects for taking shots or picking up items. Your characters cry when attacked, zombies make appropriate groans, and monsters, well, make monstrous noises.

  Mar 08 2006 - Jovovich Talks Evil 3

Milla Jovovich told SCI FI Wire that she's eagerly awaiting the start of the third installment of the Resident Evil series, which will begin shooting in May. She said that her character, Alice, is going to have a lot more action and special powers in the sequel Resident Evil: Extinction, which will again be written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson (Alien vs. Predator).

"Well, definitely, Alice has changed a bit, and so we can expect some crazy new stuff," Jovovich revealed about her character, who again battles zombie-like mutants created by a virus that broke out in a secret facility called the Hive.

The Resident Evil films are based on the popular video-game franchise, and this one will bring back Alice's comrade-in-arms Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory), who was introduced in the second film. The third film will shoot in Toronto.

"The script is awesome, and it's going to be really good," Jovovich said. "I don't want to say too much, because I really haven't talked to them about what I can and can't say. I would tell you the whole story, but I'm not sure I can. [I] would tell you everything, but I can't."

Jovovich is staying fit to be able to do the stunt work and fighting that she's done in both Resident Evil films and her upcoming SF action movie Ultraviolet, which opens March 3. In that film, Jovovich plays a character named Violet, who shoots guns and fights with a sword. But Alice will evolve into something more like a superhero. "She has some crazy new powers," Jovovich said with a laugh. —Mike Szymanski

According to a recent interview with MTV, Milla Jovovich has apparently rebuffed the claim that the third installment of the RE movies is to be renamed Extinction and will instead remain Resident Evil: Afterlife. She also reports that the film will not end in Japan, as several rumors have already stated. She does go on to say, however, that the newest movie in the series will be unlike the other two RE movies and is quoted as saying… “It's gonna be like 'Resident Evil' meets 'Mad Max.”
As recently as early February there was a hot rumor floating through the internet that RE5 would be released February 25, 2007. This rumor was fueled by Capcom’s own official RE4 web site. On the splash page of the site was a countdown clock, which had originally been used to count down the time until the RE4 release. Many gamers took this to be a tease as to when the newest installment of the series would make its debut. Alas, it isn’t. A Capcom Rep reported to Gamespot, that the clock is in no way related to RE5. It seems that because the RE4 site remained live and because the clock had never been removed, it is now counting ‘forwards’. The clock has now been removed.

On a good note, RE5 is the eighth most tracked game on Gamespot. And this is without any release date in sight. Although most people are wagering that the game will in fact release sometime in 2007.

Resident Evil: Apocalypse [Movie]

More news about Resident Evil: Extinction has surfaced. According to Wikipedia, Paul Anderson will still be producing the movie. As reported earlier, he is no longer directing. As of now, the plot of the movie is still murky. However some more teasers have emerged. It appears that the Alice may now be cooperating with Umbrella and that the surviving STARS members may be her targets. Also, the T-Virus appears to have escaped Raccoon City, this would of course explain the post-apocalyptic theme that the movie is reported to have. Finally the Umbrella Corporation may or may not, with the T-Virus now having apparently escaped Raccoon, be planning on replacing the human race with hybrid clones.

In a follow up story, there is a rumor of a fourth Resident Evil film in the works. With a working title of only Resident Evil 4, the movie is supposedly to take place after the events of Extinction and be set in Japan. Milla Jovovich is rumored to be reprising her role as Alice and Paul Anderson has once again signed on to direct and write the screenplay. Less than nothing is known about the plot, other than it has something to do with the fall of Umbrella Inc.

However, with a recent pact made between Summit Films and Constantin, the fate of the fourth installment is unknown and it is possible the movie may never get made and may be nothing more than a rumor.

  Feb 16 2006 - Resident Evil 4 X 3

Resident Evil 4 X3Capcom has announced that Resident Evil 4 has sold over 3 million copies combined on the GC and PS2 worldwide as of the end of Jan 2006, just over 1 year since first released on GameCube. While not the largest amount sold of a title in the series, this overall total has managed to be slightly better than had been expected, especially given slow sales of the title in the beginning.

At the same time, Capcom took the chance to also announce that as of the 31st of December 2005 the entire worldwide sales of the franchise had passed the 30 million mark, just short of the series' 10th anniversary. Full details can be found at Capcom Japan, in English, right here.

Resident Evil 4 [PC, PS2, GC]

While the Xbox 360 may be off to a slow start in Japan, publishers in the country aren't about to abandon the console. The latest issue of Famitsu Xbox 360 magazine interviews developers at top companies, and they've revealed what's in store for the console for 2006--and beyond.

One of the first Japanese publishers that announced Xbox 360 support was Capcom. Producer Keiji Inafune, best known as the creator of Mega Man, is currently working on Dead Rising for the Xbox 360. He revealed to Famitsu Xbox 360 that the project's development has entered its final stages and that his staff is currently fine-tuning the game. Inafune also commented that the basic components have been completed for Capcom's second Xbox 360 title, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition. Both games are scheduled for release during 2006 in Japan, and Dead Rising is set to hit the US in May.

When asked about Resident Evil 5, Inafune revealed that development on the game still hasn't begun in earnest. He explained that his developers are working on the game's graphics and going through a lot of trial and error to come up with ideas to make it play as an all-new game. Inafune hinted that RE5 wouldn't be coming out anytime soon, commenting that Capcom has no plans to release it until it's satisfied.

When asked about other Xbox 360 projects at Capcom, Inafune commented that the company is waiting to see how the Xbox 360 fares at retail before it makes its next move. He commented that making a next-generation game costs a lot, especially in terms of human resources. Inafune explained that Capcom currently has four next-generation games in development, and each requires a team of at least 50 staffers, or 200 total employees--nearly half the company's designers. Inafune thinks that the game industry may be entering into a new stage where it has to turn to outside investors to fund ballooning next-gen budgets, much like the film industry does.

Konami also feels the need to prepare for the changing game market, and it's starting to reorganize. Konami game software company president Michihiro Ishizuka told Famitsu Xbox 360 that Konami will be establishing development studios in four regions of the world in an effort to shift from a primarily Japanese company to a global enterprise. Up until now, Konami created all its games in Japan, but Ishizuka told the magazine that times have changed, and the markets in various regions have different demands and business practices.

Ishizuka admitted that 360 sales in Japan have been slow, but he hopes to release games that will help the console penetrate the traditionally Xbox-resistant market. However, he also commented that strong demand for the next-gen machine in North America and Europe means that Konami's Xbox 360 games will be fundamentally catered toward consumers in those two regions.

In terms of global expansion, Square Enix has been the first Japanese publisher to offer a massively multiplayer online role-playing game for the Xbox 360. The publisher has begun a beta of Final Fantasy XI in Japan, America, and Europe. In particular, Europe has been a major target for Square Enix since FFXI hasn't been previously released in the region. FFXI producer Hiromichi Tanaka revealed to Famitsu Xbox 360 that official services for FFXI will be announced soon, and gamers can expect it to launch within the next few months.

Tanaka also talked a bit about Square Enix's next MMORPG project, which is about to go into full-scale development. While Tanaka didn't reveal details, he confirmed that it will take advantage of the technologies shown in Square Enix's demo trailer during Microsoft's Pre-E3 conference last year. When asked about its release period, Tanaka hinted that it might take at least another year and a half.

There's no doubt that many Japanese publishers will be announcing new Xbox 360 games at this year's E3, and one company that's already confirmed it is Sega. Sega consumer division sub-chief Hiroyuki Miyazaki commented to Famitsu Xbox 360 that his company will be announcing a number of new titles at E3 2006 targeted toward the European and North American market. Miyazaki also said that development on Chromehounds is going well, and it should come out before Mistwalker's Blue Dragon.

When asked whether Virtua Fighter 5 and House of the Dead 4 would come out for the Xbox 360, Miyazaki commented that both are currently under consideration, given their popularity in arcades worldwide.

Famitsu Xbox 360 also spoke with Naohiko Hoshino, vice president of AQ Interactive. AQ Interactive has been getting a lot of attention as an Xbox 360 game publisher, ever since it announced its three big titles at the end of 2005. The company is currently working with Mistwalker's Hironobu Sakaguchi on a new role-playing game named Cry On, and it's also developing two other games: Bullet Witch and Vampire's Rain.

Cry On, Bullet Witch, and Vampire's Rain are all large-scale projects, and Hoshino confirmed to Famitsu Xbox 360 that there's a lot of money being invested into each of them. Although it's a huge risk to throw a great deal of cash into original games that aren't sequels, Hoshino said he feels people are getting tired of the same old titles. He thinks that the launch of a new console provides the biggest opportunity to start a new franchise from scratch.

Hoshino said his aim is to expand Cry On, Bullet Witch, and Vampire's Rain into successful series. Aside from making sequels, he also hopes to expand them into arcades, mobile phones, and online content if possible.

Hoshino also revealed that AQ Interactive is considering two to three other midsized Xbox 360 projects. Whether the projects will be accepted will depend on the console's success in Japan, he said.

Just when you thought the Resident Evil 4 craze was over - think again, friends. Resident Evil 4 is planning to invade all PAL areas once more, this time on the PC. Here is an excert from Capcom Europe:

OK, here is the information which I have at the moment about this:

1) It looks as though RE4 will be released on PC in Europe this year. PLEASE NOTE: this is not confirmed yet. I don't have hard and fast information yet (which is why I said 'looks like')

2) as we do not have much experience with PC titles nowadays (it's been a long time since we released a big PC title in Europe) we are looking for a distribution partner to work with. So:

3)(it looks as though) RE4 will be released in Europe, but not by Capcom Europe. It looks as though the game will be released by someone else.

Who? When? I hear you ask. Well, I would tell you if I could. There's no information available about this yet.

Note that this will apply to Europe and Europe only. There's no news about the PC version coming to JPN or USA areas. Apparently, you can pre-order the PC version here.

Check back next week when Capcom announces plans to port Resident Evil 4 to the Sega Dreamcast. Just kidding.

  Jan 27 2006 - Deadly Silence Updates

The release of Biohazard Deadly Silence has come and gone a few days ago. Reports on the title have been fairly low key being a DS title, with most discussion surrounding the fact you can touch Jill inapproprately in an easter egg. Go figure. The same can be done to Chris though before anyone finds this to be too one sided. In any case the only other reports are of some of the wireless mode which has had some fairly decent comments and that the game has sold over 30,000 copies early on.

Outside of Japan, the release comes closer for the US and Europe, with reports of the US date being pushed up to the 7th instead of the 14th. Currently Capcom has yet to update it's official release list, but given the number of companies changing their dates - it almost seems like it's happening. Across the Atlantic, the release for the game in Europe seems to becoming clearer, with most places stating release for March 30th instead of just a generic March title. Ironically, March 30th is the exact 10th Anniversary date for Resident Evil - in the US.

  Jan 21 2006 - Capcom on Revolution

In a recent interview with overseas publication Jeux-France, Capcom producer Minoru Nakai, current responsible for the DS version of Resident Evil, commented on Nintendo's upcoming home console, codenamed Revolution. He questioned whether or not a future Revolution Resident Evil title, were it to be developed, would require the functionality of the Big N's innovative new controller.

"It's certain that the Nintendo Revolution controller is its key element, but the real question is whether the innovation within the Resident Evil series requires the usage of all of this unique controller's functions?" he asked. "We recently redefined the series with Resident Evil 4, in which the camera is repositioned behind the hero and elevated the action and intensity of the gameplay. Even if the gameplay of Resident Evil 4 remains up to my taste, we'd clearly love to exploit the potential of the Nintendo Revolution controller to prevent players tiring of this style of gameplay."

That noted, Nakai said that Capcom would prefer to first experiment on Revolution with a different franchise. "I think it be smarter to develop a game other than Resident Evil on Nintendo Revolution first so that we can become familiar with the advantages of this new control concept -- to better benefit from the potential of the controller," he said. "That's what we're working on at the moment."

He did not reveal further specifics.

Well, i don't know if people already knew this, but it's already far known that there's a new Resident Evil coming to your Nintendo DS: Resident Evil: Deadly Silence. This game already has been knewn for a couple of weeks, but i can't seem to find it on this site...

Technically, this game is just a re-make of the first Resident Evil. But now it's got the unique DS features to play.

EDITORS NOTE (DG): I just heard about this myself. The new features apparantly include reworked cutscenes, possibly new voice acting, and a weird feature where you get to slash enemies with the combat knife using the DS stylus. I haven't heard much else as yet, but I'll try to keep everyone updated.

Capcom appear to have withdrawn the currently existing footage of Resident Evil 5 from the internet, asking the sites hosting the files to take them offline.

Apparantly that footage was not supposed to be publicly available as yet.

What I personally wonder is if they will perform the same trick as with RE4, and change the entire game concept, discarding all the previous video samples and trailers... There is no evidence of this as yet, in fact this is merely my own idle speculation, but it certainly wouldn't be the first time, as shown by RE2/1.5 and RE4.

In fact, just about all of their Resident Evil games have undergone such changes during development, so it will be interesting to see what direction they decide to take with RE5.

At any rate, one wonders if the footage released when Capcom decide the time is right will be significantly different to that which was withdrawn...
